Herd Programs for Palm Personal Digital Assistant

Two  versions of the Kingswood Herd program for the Palm Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) – a small calculator sized handheld computer are now available in Northern Ireland

One of these integrates fully with the Kingswood Herd management, the Kingswood Herd for PDA program.

 The other is a stand alone PDA program which works completely independently of any other computer software.

The standalone PDA program is for farmers who want a simple fertility management aid in the Palm PDA, but who do not want the full Kingswood Herd Management computer package at this stage.

Designed for users of DARD’s APHIS Online system, the Standalone program picks up the data from the APHIS system and moves it into a Palm PDA.  This product however is more than just a browser for the APHIS data.  The  program adds the following functionality to the standard APHIS Online system.

• Identification of animals by freeze brand rather than only by Ear Tag number
   

• Record fertility events such as Heats, Services, Dry off in the Palm as they happen on farm
   

• Save the fertility information and match up with the APHIS Online data every time the most recent APHIS Online data is downloaded from the ruralni.gov.uk website.
   

• Provide individual animal record cards with both basic APHIS data such as ear tag, date of birth, colour breed sex, and also fertility data such as last service date, number of serves, due next service date, due to dry date, due to calve date.
   

• Provide management action lists for the week or month ahead for: animals due to serve, animal due to dry off, animals due to calve.
   

• Provide warning action lists for beef users for animals approaching 15 months (bull beef systems), animals approaching 30 months and animals over 3 months purchased (eligible for FQAS bonus).

No farm PC based software is required for this program.  The Standalone program in the Palm PDA does the processing of the data to filter out animals due for service, due to calve etc.  It is essentially a substitute for the big calving wheel used by many farmers to track fertility information such as heats and service details and to calculate management action lists based on this fertility information. 

Under the ‘Use of Innovative Technology on Farm’ project in Northern Ireland, funding may be available for the handheld Palm PDA.  More information is on the TGM Software Solutions website www.tgmsoftware.com.
